Kikomun Creek Provincial Park is a 685-hectare park on the southern region of the Rocky Mountain Trench in British Columbia. The park provides recreational access to a lake called Lake Koocanusa. Nearby towns include Fernie, Elko, Jaffray and Crownest Highway 3. The closest of these towns is Fernie. Kikomum Creek Provincial Park is located 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Fernie. The park is the home to one of British Columbia's largest populations of Western Painted Turtles. These turtles, recognized because of their distinct red and yellow undersides, can often be seen sunbathing on logs by the park's lakes. Two of the lakes where a visitor will most likely see these turtles include Hidden Lake and Surveyors Lake.
Nature lovers are guaranteed to see an abundance of wildlife in Kikomun Creek Provincial Park. Animals like elk, black bears, cougars, coyotes, deer and badgers are common, as are muskrat and beaver. Bird lovers can enjoy watching mallards, blue herons, osprey, American Kestrels, red-tailed hawks, osprey, owls and bald eagles. The park has many small lakes likely created from glacial activity, Ponderosa pine forests and open grasslands. Activities visitors to Kikomun Creek Provincial Park can participate in include camping, swimming, hiking, fishing and mountain biking. The park features many easy hiking trails around its lakes as well as old roads and railway beds that are popular for mountain biking.
During the summer months the park offers educational interpretive programs that include slide shows, guided walks, and children's programs. There are 105 campsites, many of which are large enough to accommodate a large RV. The campground is open from May 1 to September 30. Campsite fees range from $9 to $22 per night.
