The present day Chateau style Fernie Courthouse in Fernie is fourth courthouse to have been built in this region, after a devastating fore burnt down much of the third. Built in 1909, the courthouse is one of the most magnificent and picturesque courthouses to ever have been built in the state.
The exterior is largely built of materials sourced from the British Columbia and Alberta and the red pressed brick structure is embellished with Calgary sandstone and copper cornices. The inside of the courthouse is breathtaking with a tiled floor assembled in a fret-like pattern, six beautiful stained glass windows, each of which bears a historic BC court of Arms and stunning woodwork. The balustrade is adorned with figured metal while stair posts bear hand carved dogwood emblems. The entrance to the courthouse is a sweeping set of slate and steel stairs, which are located towards the left side of the building.
The second floor, which contains the courtroom, the jury court and barrister's room is done up in West Coast Cedar and is covered with a lovely paneled dome. The courtroom exits to the Judges Quarters via a small stairway that is done up in carved wood patterned in little hearts while the room itself looks out to a spectacular view.
Visit the Fernie Courthouse for a look into one of the most exquisite pieces of architecture you will find in this region.
