Cedar Valley Old Growth Reserve in Fernie, British Columbia offers a very historic area of the most natural type. Located just outside of the larger city of Fernie, the reserve offers many outstanding views from just about any vantage point in it. The old growth of the reserve is actually a large selection of cedar trees that are over 900 years old. These towering, seemingly heaven reaching trees will create the sense of being awe struck as soon as you enter the region. The reserve is located within the Canadian Rocky Mountains and in the backdrop of those trees, you will see the mountains rolling along behind the reserve.
The location is ideal for those that want to view nature at its most natural state. Undisturbed with a long history, there are many unique things to take in. There are over 7,000 acres of untouched wilderness surrounding the reserve. Guests are welcome to travel through the area. There are several trails for hiking, camping and just animal watching. A large number of plants can be found throughout the area as well.
Nearby, you will find Island Lake Lodge which is located in the center of this large expanse of wilderness. During the summer months, hiking and outdoor treks are sponsored by the lodge. During the winter months, the lodge offers skiing. When you travel back, closer to the city of Fernie, you will come upon another forest like area where you will find cottonwood trees that are 400 years old. Walking trails are throughout. Visitors are encouraged to watch the wildlife throughout the reserve including the elk, black and grizzly bears, the bald eagles, the mule deer and the white tailed deer as many make this their home.
