Castle Mountain near Fernie, British Columbia offers an amazing view. The mountain is located within the Banff National Park and is part of the Canadian Rockies. It is located about in the middle of Lake Louise and Banff. One look at this mountain from the front (such as while on Trans Canada Highway) the mountain looks as if it cannot be climbed. Yet, it can, from the other side on the northeastern slopes. There is a trail that leads hikers around the eastern side to Rockbound Lake.
The mountain's name is that which was given to it by James Hector in 1858. The name depicts the sheer look of the mountain as a fortress, or castle, in its stature. The massif has several high points. One of those is Helena Ridge which is about 2862m tall. Another is Television Peak, the largest at 2970m. Stuart Knob is also a tall point at 2850m. Television Peak is called that because it has a TV repeater located at the top of the peak. The elevation of the entire mountain is at 2766m, or 9075 feet. It was first ascended in 1884 by Arthur P. Coleman.
Visitors that wish to climb Castle Mountain can do so. Visitors should hike to Rockbound Lake and take the backside up the mountain. This is a daylong excursion and a difficult one. It will require at least 12 hours if you plan for a return trip. Visitors can camp at Tower Lake which is below the headwall leading to Rockbound Lake. Snow is often at the upper routes even into late summer so be sure to pack the right equipment.
