While visiting Fernie, you’ll find plenty of chances to engage in outdoor activities and get to know the town as well with their special annual events. Whether you are coming to Fernie for the holidays or perhaps for a spring break ski trip, you’ll find lots to do in this charming town. Below are some of the most important events in Fernie that add extra delight to this resort town.

Griz Days
Griz Days are celebrated both in downtown Fernie and at Fernie Alpine Resort. Griz Days began with a local legend, The Griz. According to Fernie legend, The Griz is a man who was raised by bears and lived in a cave. Town folk would say that this man would shoot his musket into the sky to break open the clouds so that snow would fall. Therefore, in order to thank The Griz for all the snow and keep up town lore, the people of Fernie began a festival in The Griz’s honor. This festival takes place in March, when the snowfall in the area is quite heavy. At the festival, you’ll find family friendly activities such as a parade, a family carnival, sporting events and competitions, and parties.

Devinci/Kelsey’s Thursday Night Race Series
These weekly mountain bike races take place at Fernie Alpine Resort from June until August. Cyclists of all ages are welcome to compete in these races for prizes. These races often have different themes each night, such as Hawaiian Night or Wild West Night; dressing in accordance to the theme will earn cyclists bonus points. These races also provide the chance to donate to the needy with a food drive themed night as well. Even if you don’t participate in the races, these competitions are fun to watch and even have refreshments afterwards.

Taste of Fernie
The Taste of Fernie features not only some of Fernie’s best restaurant items but also art and entertainment from Fernie locals. Ten of Fernie’s local restaurants participate in this event, including the Old Elevator Restaurant & Wine Bar. Along with the chance to purchase food from the restaurants, you’ll also find a wine-paring workshop and a beer garden at this festival. After you’ve eaten to your contentment, you can browse the products of local artists and crafters put their work on display for purchase at the Artisan’s Market. Also, don’t forget to watch and listen to some of Fernie’s talented entertainers at this festival as well.
