White River in Eureka Springs, AR
The White River in Eureka Springs is part of an extensive system of waterways and lakes that surround the historical town. Many tourists visit the area simply to enjoy the outdoor activities that the various waterways provide and the White River is easily one of the most popular sections.
The river itself runs for a total length of 13 miles from its start at the Beaver Dam down to Beaver Town. There are numerous cabin rental sites and camping grounds along the river's length, many of which have stunning views of the nearby Ozark Mountains. In addition there are a number of sites where it is possible to hire canoes and kayaks for either day trips or weekend jaunts along the entire 13 mile stretch. You can also hire camping equipment for overnight expeditions and a canoeing instructor is necessary.
Occasionally, when the Beaver Dam is generating the river currents and water levels become unstable thus making some sections of the river inaccessible however for the majority of the time the currents are suitable even for novice canoeists and older children. There are a number of very scenic picnic sites to stop at along the course of the river and if canoeing isn't for you then you can follow the designated hiking trails instead. Alternatively you may want to hire a bicycle or horse to help with the journey!
The White River offers a very scenic and relaxing experience and many areas along its course are perfect for photographers and nature lovers. The fishing is also good there and many people find themselves catching world class bass without even trying.
