Tourists and vacationers traveling out West often make it a point to stop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Although some people aren't aware of this paradise that's located in the Ozark Mountains, the town is not only one of the most popular vacation stops if Arkansas but is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of the many unique and interesting things offered here, one of which is the Stone Auditorium. Although most of Eureka Springs was originally built with wood, a fire that almost destroyed the entire town in the 1800s made them change to stone structures. It is this great construction that contributes to the Stone Auditorium still being a major part of the town.
Although built way back in 1928, the Stone Auditorium plays a large part in the cultural world of Eureka Springs. Through the past 20 years a lot has been done to restore the Stone Auditorium, with work continuing to be done. There's been restoration to the bathrooms, the windows, the stage and they continue to beautify this historic place in Eureka Springs. Grants have been received from organizations like the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, National Endowment for the Art, National Trust for Historic Preservation and many more that wanted to see this auditorium stay. The Auditorium has been used for school performances and many other cultural activities. Each year the Eureka Springs Theater Company puts on three performances, which are held at the Stone Auditorium. The company, in exchange, has made many contributions to the community center so that they may be able to continue with their Performing Arts.
