The first national river in the country, the Buffalo National River is roughly 150 miles long, cutting its way through layers of limestone, sandstone and chert. The crystal clear waters descend nearly 2,000 feet until it finally joins the White River.
The Buffalo River has much to offer by way of geologic marvels, from natural springs, caves, waterfalls to natural bridges, bluffs and canyons. The river has plenty to offer for almost anyone. Canoeing is an option available all year long, as is camping on the picturesque river grounds. For hiking enthusiasts, easy trails, wheelchair accessible hikes and overnight backpacking adventures are all available on the mountain trails. Horseback riding is another attraction here and you can either mount your own steed or take a guided horseback trip. You can also choose to hot-air balloon over the 'Grand Canyon of the Ozarks' and enjoy a birds-eye view of the pristine waters of the river. The Buffalo is also considered to be a gem of a float fishing stream by veteran anglers. The unpolluted waters abound aplenty in channel catfish, green and long-ear sunfish and spotted bass.
If camping isn't exactly your cup of tea, you can choose to shack up in genuine log cabins or even modern motel rooms which offer you all the conveniences of bed and breakfast lodgings. Whether you're planning on stopping by for a day, or looking to spend a leisurely vacation, the Buffalo River makes for an ideal getaway to recharge and rejuvenate, away from the daily grind.
