Memorial Day Salute to Veterans at Sacred Arts Center in Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Every year on Memorial Day Weekend, the Sacred Arts Center in Eureka Springs, Arkansas holds a salute to American veterans of past wars in its art museum. Local veterans and politicians often speak at the event, and a group prayer is often held as well. The Sacred Arts Center is a Christian museum that houses over 1000 works of religious and Bible-themed art. Much of the art is Last Supper-themed; the museum owns a set of china depicting the Last Supper that was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm I. The museum's art collection spans all time periods; there is a marble bust of Christ that is from Roman times, as well as paintings from contemporary Christian artists like Jack Dawson and Shelli Jones Baker.
There are many mediums of religious art at the Sacred Arts Center, making it a great destination to teach children not just about religion, but also about different time periods in artistic history. You will find watercolors, oils, ceramics, bronze, marble, mosaics, carvings, and even art made from insects within the museum's walls. The somber tone of Memorial Day provides a perfect opportunity to also take a moment to reflect on religion by viewing the Sacred Arts Center's collection.
