Thousands of miles from the pastures and seashores of Scotland, where the first rounds of golf were played, visitors enjoy the pastime with a visit to Victoria Golf Course. One astute golf observer noted, years ago, that golf takes people to some of the nicest places in the world. This venerable public golf course certainly fits that description.
Since the Hudson's Bay Company established it in 1905, Victoria Golf Course has been a favorite golf stop for local citizens and vacation/golf travellers. Operated by the City of Edmonton since 1911, the 18-hole layout features large putting greens and comparatively wide fairways (making it attractive for the occasional golfer too). The course's location, near downtown Edmonton, makes it convenient as well.
While the large trees and nearby Victoria Park lend additional beauty to the 6,027-yard course, and some compare a leisurely round to a walk in the park, the design is strong enough to be a challenge to golfers of all levels. Because of its popularity it is necessary to reserve tee times two days in advance.
Victoria Golf Course offers a full-service golf experience, with lockers, changing rooms and other amenities in the clubhouse. Club repair, private and group lessons are available by arrangement. Golfers also have access to a putting green and driving range on site. Visitors should plan to dress according to the club's dress code. Current greens fees begin at $33 on weekdays and $40 on weekends. Nine-hole rates and rental clubs are available as well. Contact numbers: 780-496-4900, 780-496-4710.
