Featuring more than 700 plant species, the Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton is the most spectacular indoor horticultural garden in the city.<
Designed by renowned architect Peter Hemmingway, the conservatory combines the practical requirements for plant height with an astounding aesthetic appeal. The plants are housed in four glass pyramids, each of which bears a unique theme.
The Tropical Pyramid is carefully constructed to resemble a lush tropical rain forest with vibrantly hued plants and fig trees. You can view plants undergo the natural cycle of dormancy and replenishment in the controlled environs of the Temperate Pyramid. You can find the array of plants flourish in their springtime exuberance even as outdoors, the city prepares itself for the onset on winter.
The Arctic Pyramid houses plants, native to North America, the Mediterranean region, Africa and Madagascar. These plants have the distinct ability to withstand and dry air, infrequent moisture and temperature fluctuations. The Show Pyramid is arguably the most diverse of the lot. With a collection that is refreshed six times a year, this section is devoted to seasonal blooming types.
The Conservatory also features an Art Wall, towards the north of the atrium. Here, works by talented up and coming artists are featured to allow them exposure. Numerous events are organized throughout the year like orchid shows, sculpture exhibitions and even the eccentric Mad Hatter's Tea Party.
You can even stop by at the Coffee Shop for a light meal of soup and sandwiches or even for some of their delectable desserts. The Conservatory can also be leased out for private functions like parties, dinners and even weddings. With four exciting venues to lend your celebration a touch of uniqueness, you're sure to find the perfect alternative here. You can visit the conservatory from 9 am to 5.30 pm on weekdays and from 11 am to 5.30 pm on weekends and holidays.
