Mill Creek Ravine Park in Edmonton, AB
Mill Creek Ravine Park, located in the Edmonton Mill Creek District near the city, is a popular outdoor hiking site open from dawn to dusk every day.& Suitable for all ages from toddlers to adults, the paved trails and trails covered with "chips" provide everything from a comfortable 30 minute walk to a slightly longer 1.5 hour visit. Located in a wooded area, across the North Saskatchewan River, Mill Creek Ravine Park offers a brief outdoor respite from everyday activity within sight of the Edmonton skyline. This park has a number of sites with barbecue facilities and also features a fine outdoor pool, if members of the family or group want to enjoy a swim. The Argyll Sports Centre is located nearby.
The park and surrounding area, which got its name from a gristmill established at the site in 1878, is part of one of the world's largest park systems. The primary geographical feature is the North Saskatchewan River, a glacier-fed stream that flows 800 miles from the Canadian Rockies to the central part of the province. Named a Canadian Heritage River 18 years ago, the North Saskatchewan was heavily used for trade and exploration, beginning in the early 1800s.
Those who choose to visit or hike during the summer may find the weather a bit warm and should be aware that this is an outdoor tourist attraction with limited covering from the elements. But the park's swimming pool and its proximity to the city make it quite popular, for couples, groups and families.
