For those who are railroad and train fanatics, and who happen to be travelling up Alberta way, the Alberta Railway Museum in Edmonton may be one of the prime stops on the trip. The museum has a great collection of equipment and buildings, with a focus on train cars and locomotives from Canadian companies (Canadian National Railways — CNR — and Northern Alberta Railways — NAR).
Alberta Railway Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from late May to the first Monday in September (Labour Day). The gift shop sells a wide variety of souvenirs, snacks and drinks.
During our summer season, our speeder cars run daily, offering passenger rides. We also offer passenger service with our locomotives on select weekends - Victoria Day (May), Canada Day (July), Heritage Day (August), and Labour Day (September). Guided and self-guided tours of the museum are available, and last approximately 90 minutes.
One of the particularly exciting things about Alberta Railway Museum is that it is an industrial site. While that may not seem so special to some, it does mean that, in the summer, passenger rides are available. On certain weekends, passenger service is provided using locomotives (Victoria Day, Canada Day, Heritage Day and Labour Day). The museum also offers guided tours on request. A rather complete tour of the facility takes about 90 minutes.
Alberta Railway Museum is under the management of Alberta Pioneer Railway Association, a non-profit organization. More information about the museum and the organization is available by calling (780) 968-0167.
