The Alberta Legislature Building was opened in 1912. A majestic structure of yellow sandstone structure, which once housed the Legislature, the building overlooks a lovely river, trim lawns and effervescent fountains.
The building is, in itself, an architectural beauty. Built in the Beaux-style, the columned portico and the stately dome are taken as symbols of Alberta's confidence in the future. The interior houses a number of exhibits which include the portraits of all the people that have governed the historic state and you can wander through the government legislature chambers for a trip down Alberta's memory lane. You can even opt for a guided tour of the Alberta Legislature Building. Tours are conducted every hour, from 9 am to 3 pm and are free of cost. The tours begin near the water fountain and climb up several levels, each of which bears with it a unique revelation of this building and all that its walls have witnessed.
The Interpretative Center also conducts several Student Programs which include schools tours, visits to the Gallery during session and a number of educational games and activities. Visitors who are learning English as a second language can opt for the special ESL tour where they receive a full-color trip guide which details the tour and even contains questions and activities for follow-up practice!
The Gift Shop contains a large collection of Canadian crafts and souvenirs that make excellent gift ideas. For further information and to arrange a group tour, you can call the Center at 780 427 2490 or 780 427 7362, or email visitorinfo@assembly.ab.ca
