The
Motown Historical Museum was founded in 1985 and tells the story of one of the biggest names in Motown, the Motown Record Corporation. Walking through the museum will highlight the history of the music while also showing you how it affected the culture of an entire nation. You will be taken back in time to that of the corporation's founder Berry Gordy Jr, using collections of artwork, photographs, costumes and many other fascinating objects from the 50s and 60s.
The museum is located in the original house where the Motown Record Corporation began and while taking a guided tour you can see the Gallery with its original artwork and photos of the stars, its famous sheet music and a number of stage costumes worn by the greats of the time, like the Supremes, The Temptations and even Michael Jackson himself. The gallery depicts how Motown began and how it grew into one of the most popular music genres ever. You can also visit the Echo Chamber and experience reverb as you sing before making your way to the original recording studio where many of Motown's biggest hits were actually recorded.
During the summer months the Motown Historical Museum is open Monday through to Saturday from 10am until 6pm however during the other seasons it stays closed on Mondays as well as Sundays. The museum also houses a small gift shop where you can buy mementos of your visit, including a range of clothing and caps and a variety of interesting collectables and music options that any Motown lover will want.
