The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in Detroit was established as a tribute to all the outstanding athletes of the region who have attained fame and recognition, while bringing honor to the state with their achievements.<
At the Sports Hall of Fame, you will find a collection of photographs, plaques and medallions which detail the illustrious career of over 220 former champions, medalists and significant contributors to the world of sport. You can learn about the history of Michigan's Olympians, Michigan's stadiums and arenas and also the various accomplishments of Michigan's high school, college and professional teams. Some of the greats who are honored in the Hall of Fame include Hnk Greenberg, Dave Bing and Ted Lindsay. You can also find a variety of interactive exhibits that detail and encourage the preservation of the rich history of sport in Michigan.
The Michigan Hall of Fame also sponsors numerous awards to encourage up and coming athletes and to acknowledge the achievements of those who are making new ground in athletics. Of these, the 'Wright and Filippis Award' is presented annually to an individual or group that has overcome significant challenges to make their mark in the field of sports or has significantly aided the success of another.
The 'Tomorrow's Winner Award', which was introduced in 1995 is awarded to one male and one female high school athlete, who have maintained a good track record, both on the filed on off it. Their accomplishments in their academic and athletic careers indicate an illustrious future in the field of athletics and a career beyond it.
The annual 'Gerald R Ford Sportsperson of the Year award' is presented to an athlete who, in his lifetime, has contributed significantly to sports or sport activities.
