Henry Ford Estate in Detroit, MISpread over 1300 acres of picturesque farmland, the Henry Ford Estate in Detroit offers visitors a glimpse into the persona behind the legendary name. Home to Henry Ford and his wife from 1915 to 1947, Fair Lane is a testament to Henry Ford's surprisingly simple tastes and reflects his unique interests and ideals.
Most of the residence is built of roughly-hewn Ohio limestone, in keeping with the rugged beauty of the surrounding countryside. Here, visitors can explore the 56 rooms that comprise the 'Residence' as it was called, which is built around an opulent carved Elizabethan staircase. You can also visit the Library which once comprised of an impressive collection of 4,000 books, handpicked by Mr. Ford himself. The titles, which range from gardening and landscaping to religion and home design, indicate Mr. Ford's diverse and eclectic interests. Several books in the collection are signed by authors with personal notes addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Ford. The Library's intricately carved rose and thistle patterned plaster ceiling was shipped in pieces from an English Manor house and reassembled here, in Fair Lane. The grounds which were designed by renowned landscape artist Jens Jensen include a summer house, a man-made lake, pony barn, greenhouse and a ten thousand plant peony garden. You can also visit 'Santa's Workshop' which was used for Christmas celebrations, the child-sized working farm that was built for the Ford grandchildren and the five hundred birdhouses that were erected in view of Mr. Ford's interest in ornithology. You can purchase your tickets at the Potting shed and then advance to the visitor's center that is located on the lower level of the Powerhouse. Your tour will commence with an introductory video which documents the history of the Ford family and the story behind their legendary home. You can also purchase unique souvenirs at the Henry Ford Estate Gift Shop. Here, you can pick up the noted 'Henry Ford Estate Souvenir Book' which highlights the features of Fair Lane or curios like toy model 'T' cars, jaw harps just like those Henry Ford used to play and even some antique jewelry. The Henry Ford Estate Restaurant is housed in the mansion's original swimming pool room. Here, you can lunch on an array of homemade soups, innovative sandwiches and fresh salads. Don't forget to try the Whitefish with almonds, cherries and raisins which comes highly recommended. You can plan your private parties, luncheons or even your wedding in the historic music room for an unforgettable experience.
