GM World in Detroit, MI
GM World is the headquarters building for the world's largest automobile manufacturer, General Motors. The lobby and showroom of the building tells the story of the products and cars created by the company and houses up to 26 new and classic cars, many of which have never been shown anywhere else in North America. The exhibit is interactive and as you walk past each of the displays a video begins which highlights the car and its product information. The lobby is home to a number of concept cars from the 1950s through to today and you can even sit in some of the autos, such as the Corvette and the Hummer, and get a feel for how it would be to drive them.
The showroom is split into four main sections — family cars, off road and outdoor, sporty, and luxury and there are a number of cars to see in each section. Many people visit GM World just to see the luxury selection which they may never catch a glimpse of in the real world! All of the cars on show are pristine however and are a must see for car enthusiasts.
GM World is open Monday through to Friday from 10am until 5pm and as well as the cars there are a number of other things worth seeing. The actual building is part of a futuristic complex joined together by glass walkways and is one of the tallest buildings in Detroit. You can take the glass elevator up over 70 floors where you will find a cocktail lounge and restaurant open to the public and which has outstanding views of the city.
