Detroit Science Center in Detroit, MI


Established nearly thirty years ago by Detroit businessman and philanthropist Dexter Ferry, the Detroit Science center aims to introduce visitors of every age to world of science and technology in a vibrant, exciting and entertaining environment. One of the first centers in the country to be dedicated to scientific learning, the Science Center was also the first to introduce Detroit to the Imax Dome theatre experience.

The science center has received nationwide acclaim for its exhibit titled, "Our Body: The Universe Within" which allows you to explore and better understand the myriad systems and the functioning of the human body. The exhibit consists of 20 actual human bodies and 135 anatomical displays which have been preserved through a process of polymer impregnation, which replaces the bodily fluids with polymers to prevent decay and decomposition.

You can also gaze into a star-studded sky while learning about novas, black holes and galaxy clusters at the Dassault Systèmes Planetarium. You can choose from a variety of shows like the Solar System adventure which introduces you the earth and its neighborhood, and the Journey to the Edge of Space and Time where you can explore the universe right from its nascent stages.

The Science center also houses a space laboratory which boasts of three telescopes to allow you to learn how astronomers use these devices, a Solar System Distance Scale which lets you position each planet at the correct distance from the sun and view the latest images from the Hubble Space telescope.

You can also study the numerous ways by which Robotics, prototypes and simulators convert ideas into reality at the United States Steel Fun Factory or design and engineer your vision of the future at the Applied Sciences Classroom.

For the budding scientists in your family, the SBC children's gallery houses eight innovative exhibit areas to develop their social and motor skills, while also introducing them to 'Science through Play'. Children between the ages of 6 to 13, can help Papa Luigi make a thousand pizzas by learning decimals, proportions and fractions, and also explore the Milky way and the Solar system in programs specially designed for them.

You can pick up a Visitor's Guide at the Visitors' Service desk when you arrive for a complete schedule of the center's show times and the activities lined up for the day, as soon as you arrive. If you plan to visit the Center in a group of ten or more, you can also call ahead to avail of discounted group rates.

You can even choose to host your toddler's birthday party at the Detroit Science Center. You can take your pick from a variety of birthday packages like the Gigantasaurus Package which includes a special screening of the film Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia.

In keeping with their theme of learning through exploration and hands-on experience, the center also arranges from several educational programs and science camps for both children and adults.
