Cranbrook Institute of Science in Detroit, MI
The Cranbrook Institute of Science is a visitor attraction that allows both adults and children to learn about science and technology and to see how ongoing research lets us live life as we do today. There are thousands of exhibits and artifacts on display which will give you an insight into the basics of science while also giving you a look at the natural history of the earth.
In addition to the main museum, the Cranbrook Institute also boasts a planetarium, a live bat program and an observatory. The planetarium shows a number of programs throughout Saturday and Sunday which prove to be highly popular with children while the live bat program gives you the opportunity to learn about bat conservation while actually seeing the creatures up close. The observatory opens its telescopes to the public on a Friday evening and on a Sunday afternoon when you can learn how to watch the sun safely.
The Institute also has a number of temporary exhibits that change throughout the year so depending on when you visit you may be able to enjoy such things as 'Candy Unwrapped' where you can explore the science behind candy by eating the exhibit! When you have finished learning for the day you can enjoy a sandwich or other snack in the Reflections Café before hitting the gift shop and choosing from games, books, science kits, telescopes, microscopes and globes among other things.
