Charles H Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, MI


Founded in 1965, the Charles H Wright Museum of African American history holds the distinction of being the largest museum dedicated to African American History in the world. The museum, which is spread over 120,000 square feet, is located on Brush Street in the heart of Detroit's Cultural Center.

The museum aims at making the history of the African American community come alive through a host of interactive exhibits, insightful tours and numerous exhibitions which it conducts throughout the year. Home to over 30,000 artifacts, which are arranged in themed collections, some of which include the Blanche Coggin Underground Railroad Collection, the Harriet Tubman Museum Collection and the Sheffield collection, the museum also features seven exhibition areas devoted to African Americans and their stories. Of these, the core exhibit titled 'And Still We Rise' is an interactive, multi-level exhibit which explores the journey of African American History and Culture through the ages. You can also browse through an exposition comprising of select artifacts from the vast personal collection of NBA star Chris Webber, which include rare books, poems on various subjects and letters from George Washington and Booker T Washington.

'Detroit Performs!' is a photomontage dedicated to artists who have contributed significantly to the field of performing arts like Aretha Franklin, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and focuses on three key areas, namely music, dance and theatre.

To make the most of your visit to the Wright museum, you can also call ahead to schedule a guided tour for yourself and your group. You can even opt for a walk-in guided tour, which will cost you about $30, subject to the availability of a museum educator.

The museum also conducts several events throughout the year which enjoy immense popularity with locals and visitors alike. Of these, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is held on the third Monday in January, pays tribute to the life and legacy of the legendary Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King with performances, movies, lectures and workshops. This event is especially known for the famous annual community brunch.

 The museum invites volunteers for different positions such as museum educators, entrance or gallery greeters and welcomes assistance during the planned and annual museum events. The gift shop houses a wide array of books, collectables and artifacts that are either native to the African continent or crafted by local artisans. The museum also offers you the option of hosting your private parties and gatherings at a choice of unusual venues within the museum itself.
