Any traveler knows that transportation can make or break a vacation. Visitors are pleased to learn that arriving in Destin and traveling around the city and beach are both easy and scenic, whether by air or by land!
ARRIVING IN DESTIN-FT. WALTON BEACH:
By Air
The Okaloosa Regional Airport (airport code: VPS) is just eight miles north of Destin-Ft. Walton Beach, on State Highway 85, approximately a 20 minute drive from Destin. The airport is located on Eglin Air Force Base in Valparaiso, Florida. The Panama City Beach Airport (airport code: PFN) is a second option, but it is not as convenient as Okaloosa.
By Car
Destin can be reached via U.S. 98, which travels along the Emerald Coast from east to west, with Destin and Ft. Walton Beach being two jewels along its route. For those coming from 331 south, take Highway 85 south at the Alabama-Florida line, right into Destin. From Interstate 10, drivers should exit onto Highway 85 south at the Ft. Walton Beach exit, which leads into Destin.
GETTING AROUND DESTIN-FT. WALTON BEACH:
By Car
Many of the area's main attractions and accommodations are located on Highway 98, as it runs east-west along the Emerald Coast. This route is not only convenient, it is also very scenic! Drivers must take note, however, that during peak travel season (late May through late September), traffic is usually heavy enough for potential delays and stress.
