Turtle Mound near Daytona Beach, FL
At fifty feet tall and extending more than six hundred feet along the shoreline of the Indian River, Turtle Mound is the highest shell midden in the country and has been used as a navigational landmark for seafarers since the days of the Spanish explorers in the early 1600s. Dating back to 2000?? and containing more than 35,000 cubic yards of oyster and shellfish remains, several parts of the Timucua Indian mound are now accessible to visitors via an informative boardwalk, with interpretive signs along the way to explain the history of the mound and of the early settlers. From its peak, a spectacular panorama of the Atlantic Ocean, Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Merritt Island greets modern visitors just as it did the prehistoric inhabitants of the area.
