Originally constructed in 1830 on a sugar cane plantation of several thousand acres, the Sugar Mill Ruins represent the remains of a once thriving Florida industry, completely destroyed during the Seminole Indian War. The ruins, which include the steam-powered mill's coquina rock walls, a mule-powered cane press, cast iron sugar vats, a sugar press, and an iron lever, still give visitors to the site a glimpse of the industry's past glory. A short nature trail meanders around the clearing of the ruins, through a palmetto hammock, and under the century-old oak trees, and offers visitors a unique look at how the landscape appeared to early settlers.
