Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens in Ormond Beach, FL
Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens is a non-profit organization that's been in business since 1946. Its main purpose has to been to serve the Ormond Beach community as a museum by offering exhibitions by Florida, national, regional and international artists as well as to promote the awareness and appreciation of the arts by way of lectures, classes, demonstrations and programs. Although the majority of the funds raised for the museum come from donations, a small percentage come from grants. Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens actually consists of the Gardens, the Art Museum and a War Memorial. Originally the purpose of the Museum was to display the paintings of Malcome Fraser, an illustrator and very popular artist. His 56 paintings spanned a period of 50 years. Fraser donated his paintings as a War Memorial to anyone that would house the paintings in a suitable building and make them free for viewing. The city of Ormond took him up on his offer along with Ormond Beach and Volusia County residents.
Although it was originally called the Ormond War Memorial Art Gallery, due to the purchase of more land from donations and work performed by veterans and generous citizens, it became much more. Today this historical landmark consists of war monuments to pay tribute to those that gave up their lives, the Gardens, which provide a steady stream of seasonal displays of their plant collection and the Museum, which features exhibitions that change throughout the year as well as many art classes. Also of interest is the Emmons Cottage, a house from the 1880s, which is one of the few structures that still remains and now is a place where arts and crafts classes take place. The Cottage is also an art gallery, which sells and shows the work of many of the local artists.
