Daytona Beach, on Florida's Atlantic coast, is said to be the world's most famous beach. It occupies a slender, 24 mile long peninsula that is separated from the mainland by the Halifax River. The city of Daytona Beach is 54 miles northeast of Orlando and 251 miles north of Miami. Oceanfront Park is one of the principal attractions of this popular tourist destination. It is a historic site, listed with the United States National Register of Historic Places in March of 1999.
Oceanfront Park is just off Ocean Avenue, north of the intersection of Main Street and Atlantic. The original Daytona Beach Bandshell and Oceanfront Park Complex was developed between 1934 and 1936. It was a much larger park then. Today all that remain of the original stone structures are the landmark Bandshell and the seating area around it, a monument to Edward H. Armstrong, and the Daytona Beach Clock Tower and Fountain. Oceanfront Park is very picturesque, with panoramic views of the Atlantic and the shoreline. There is plenty of grassy space for picnics. There is a playground for children, and a lighted volleyball court. A parking garage is nearby.
When you visit Oceanfront Park, you are within easy walking distance of good places to eat and drink. You can go to the Main Street Pier (also called the Daytona Beach Pier and the Ocean Pier) which is the longest wooden pier on the east coast. This is a great place for fishing or just enjoying the view. Other nearby attractions are the Halifax Historical Museum, the Marine Science Center, the Museum of Arts and Sciences and the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse and Museum. Beach Street is the main downtown shopping district.
