Mary McLeod Bethune Home & Gravesite in Daytona Beach, FL
When you're visiting Daytona Beach, one of the first things you're going to notice is just how much architectural and cultural heritage is still preserve in the buildings that make up the many historic districts of this popular beach town. One historic attraction in particular stands out, though, as a testament to the great past of the Daytona area: the Mary McLeod Bethune Home and Gravesite. Those who are familiar with Bethune-Cookman College, one of the most honored colleges in all of Florida, will be delighted to visit this, the home of its founder.
The home serves not only as a memorial to the person, but also to the Foundation which she establishe, a business dedicated to conducting research towards racial harmony and promoting affordable education for all. The house is also locate right on the college campus, so while you're visiting, you can also get a look at the rest of the great architecture that makes up the Bethune Cookman campus. The house itself was built in 1914, and served as the founder's home until the time of her death. Subsequent to that, it opened to the public as a museum of sorts and has remained open ever since. More than just being a tribute to Ms. Bethune, however, the home also honors a host of other local dignitaries and alumni, past and present. In 1975, the home was honored by the National Park Service when it was declared a national historic landmark. Since then, visitors can come anytime, Monday thru Friday, 9am to 4pm for a tour of the premises and a history lesson they won't soon forget!
