Howard Thurman Home, Daytona Beach, FL
The Howard Thurman Home, built in 1888, was the childhood home of Dr. Howard Thurman, a theologian, author, preacher, and creator of the action-oriented non-violent approach to racial equality that would later be championed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One of the most important figures in Black American history, Thurman acted as America's primary contact with Mahatma Gandhi and, when he was named dean of Boston University, became the first African American to hold that post in a predominantly white university. Thurman was born in the frame house and lived there until 1917, when he left to attend high school in Jacksonville. Guided tours of the home are offered, but visitors must call ahead for an appointment.
