The name "bandshell" might seem somewhat misleading, but in fact it's quite literal as to what it implies. The structure really was built of coquina, a material often found on seashores, and very much similar to the chitonous material seen in sea shells. Dating back to 1937, that makes the bandshell something of an architectural marvel in its own right, only increasing its value as a tourist attraction.
