Parque Punta Sur in Cozumel, QR is an ecological reserve which serves to educate rather than provide fun in the sun. For an approximate $10 per person entrance fee, you will learn about the diversity here from the reefs to the turtle nesting grounds to mangroves to the lagoons filled with brackish water. The lesson here is that nature is a very precious thing and since a hurricane came through a few years ago and interrupted the ecological environment, you can see first hand how nature and wildlife moves on.
When you park at the Parque Punta Sur, almost immediately you can explore a lighthouse called El Caracol, which was built by the ancient Mayans. A truck shepherds you from the lighthouse to the beach area where you can hop a ride on a pontoon boat to explore the estuary. You will likely see iguanas, birds, alligators, turtles and other wildlife during your exploration. The emphasis of all the touring within the park is conservation.
The beach area if beautiful, something you would see in a magazine with white sandy beaches and crystal blue waters. You can lounge on the beach or take an hour for dozing in the hammocks. Or, you can rent some snorkel gear the the Balneario el Caracol restaurant to go exploring in the water. There is another lighthouse at Punta Celarain Faro which is at the southern tip of Parque Punta Sur which you can explore and visit the museum housed within it.
The views from the lighthouses and the park itself are a dream so be sure that camera is charged up and you have plenty of digital memory sticks to store all of the interesting memories you will have here.
