This is a museum with many exhibits reflecting the history and geography of the island as well as giving examples of what the life is like beneath the sea.
This museum was once located inside the first hotel in Cozumel, as will be evident to anyone wanting to learn more about the history. You will see exhibits of coral reefs and mangroves on the bottom floor of the museum as well as other displays explaining Cozumel's ecosystems. On the upper level, you will be able to view different ancient artifacts that were found at Mayan ruins in the local area. Some of the most beautiful native pottery and stone tools can be found as part of the exhibits as well. What many find interesting is the presentations describing the economic and cultural development that Cozumel has experienced in the 20th century.
Guided tours are available during the hours they are open, which are 10 a.m. to 6 pm. You can expect to spend up half a day here at this museum, which does not include any time you may spend dining at the Del Museo café, which is located at the museum. Admission is only $3, so it's a very inexpensive way to spend an afternoon learning the history of this island. The best means of transportation here are walking or taking a ferryboat. The terminal for the ferry boat is only 3 blocks from the museum.
