Felipe Xicotencatl Shipwreck in Cozumel, Mexico
Those who have a great deal of experience not only diving but also
wreck diving may very well be interested in exploring the Felipe
Xicotencatl Shipwreck. This ship was sunk intentionally sunk in hopes
of creating an artificial reef that would rival (and consequently
protect) some of the natural coral reefs that bring in crowds of
tourists each year to the area. While the move remains a highly
controversial move, the dive remains a fascinating exploration for
those with the experience to manage it.
One word of caution, wreck dives are very dangerous for inexperienced
divers and pose no small risk to even more experienced divers. If you
are not a highly skilled diver it is best to skip this particular dive
and save it for a time when you have had a few more dives under your
belt. Furthermore, it is also recommended that you make this dive with
a group of very skilled divers for the best results and the safest
possible atmosphere.
The experience of a wreck dive is unique when compared to natural reef
dives that most divers experience. These dives do involve a certain
amount of risk that most divers are not experienced at handling. If you
are considering this dive and do not have a great deal of experience
diving in high risk situations it is strongly recommended that you
reconsider in favor of the many other wonderful diving opportunities
for all levels of divers in the area. Diving safely every time is the
best way to insure a next time.
