As part of the Great Maya Barrier Reef system, the coral reef just off the shores of Cozumel has long been recognized as a diver's paradise. Legendary diver Jacques Costeau contributed largely to the popularity that the Cozumel region has enjoyed; however, the spectacular beauty of the region has certainly helped the area to earn its reputation as one of the best dive spots in the world.

The Great Maya Barrier Reef extends from Honduras to the Northern Yucatan and is actually the second largest coral reef system in the entire world. The 32-km long reef system in Cozumel is located just off the southern leeward coast. Over the years the Giana Current has carved an extensive labyrinth that is unparalleled with any other reefs throughout the world. As a result, the reefs located in the crystal clear waters of Cozumel offer the perfect home for literally hundreds of different types of tropical fish species. In 1980, a ban was enacted against fishing along the southern coast of Cozumel specifically to protect the reef fish that thrive in the area.

One of the reasons that the reef system off Cozumel is renowned as a top diving spot in the world is the fact that the waters are continually flushed due to the strong, steady current. This means divers can take advantage of excellent visibility, more than 100 feet. The area located south of Paradise Reef was designated by the Mexican government in 1996 as a National Marine Park. Since that time dive operators on the island have worked closely with government officials to continue protecting the spectacular dive spot.

The Padi Certified Scuba Diving excursioin offers the opportunity to experience a memorable adventure in the crystal clear Caribbean waters. After a brief boat ride from Playa Uvas guests arrive at the first dive site, which reaches a depth of some 120 feet and features a variety of marine life, tunnels and coral heads. After a bit of time to rest, guests are taken to the second dive. Although only reaching a depth of 60 feet, the second dive site offers a large array of marine life and reefs than the first site and provides an amazing underwater view of Cozumel.
