USS Cod Memorial in Cleveland, OH
Maritime history buffs will want to see the USS Cod, a World War II submarine placed in commission in 1943 that is credited with sinking more than a dozen enemy vessels. The Cod's most noted missions are featured in exhibits, including the 1944 sinking of the Japanese destroyer "Karukaya" in the waters off the Philippines, and the only international submarine-to-submarine rescue in history in which the Cod aided the crew of Dutch sub "O-19" which had grounded on a coral reef in the South China Sea in 1945. Signs of the rescue are still visible on the Cod's battle flag and conning tower, which both feature the image of a martini glass to commemorate the thank-you party given by the Dutch sailors. Other exhibits on shore feature a Mark 14 steam-driven torpedo from WWII that is cut away so visitors can see the inner machinations, as well as a bronze submarine propeller, and a vintage search periscope.
