The Garfield Monument, Cleveland, OH
Built in memory of James ABuilt in memory of James A. Garfield, who progressed from Civil War hero to U.S. Representative to the 20th U.S. President, the Garfield Monument stands on a hill in Lake View Cemetery and contains the caskets of Garfield and his wife, Lucretia, as well as urns containing the remains of their daughter and her husband. Dedicated in 1890, two years after Garfield's assassination, the Monument is a 180-foot-tall cylindrical structure decorated with bas-reliefs depicting moments of the president's life, and featuring a massive statue of Garfield. Visitors are welcome to enter the Monument, where they will find an elaborate interior of mosaics, marble, and colored glass, as well as an observation deck on the upper level.
