Ghost hunters will enjoy a spooky walk around Squire's Castle, built in the 1890s by Feargus B. Squire, a Standard Oil executive, as a country home intended for himself and his wife. Located in what is now the Cleveland Metroparks, the castle's gatehouse is the only part of the home that was ever completed, and contains bedrooms, a living room, and a hunting room that was once adorned with mounted animal heads.
Local legend has it that Mrs. Squire, who was afraid of the isolated countryside, was spooked by something, fell, and died while in the house alone. Though the story may be exaggerated, her husband abandoned the project after his wife's death, leaving the stone shell that survives to this day. Visitors to the park can walk around the remains of Squire Castle and look for the woman with the lantern who reportedly appears in an upstairs window.
