Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Cleveland, OH
Situated in Cleveland's Public Square, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is an impressive Civil War memorial designed by Levi T. Scofield in the late 1800s. At 125 feet high, the monument consists of an elevated base, a tall column, and a fifteen-foot-high Statue of Liberty. Bronze sculptures on the exterior depict various battle scenes and represent the Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, and Navy branches of the armed services. Visitors can enter the elevated base of the monument, which contains a tablet room listing the nine thousand names of Northeast Ohio's Civil War veterans, as well as four bronze panels depicting the beginning of the war, the members of the Relief Society, the emancipation of the slaves, and the war's end.
