The beautiful Lake View Cemetery offers visitors an unusual and exquisitely landscaped place to learn about horticulture, architecture, and history. Founded in 1869 and modeled after the garden cemeteries of England and France, Lake View sits on 285 acres of land and is the resting place of over 100,000 people. Some of the famous residents include 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield, the one-time richest man in the world John D. Rockefeller, and law enforcement agent Eliot Ness, who is credited with bringing gangster Al Capone to justice.
Visitors should take the time to walk the grounds, which feature rare plants and flowers and some lovely monuments and chapels, including the 1901 Wade Memorial Chapel with its mosaics and Tiffany windows. The cemetery offers several guided walking tours that focus on horticulture, architecture, and geology, as well as night tours such as Bat Night, in which guests learn about and catch the different types of resident bats. Visitors should try to catch the annual blossoming of Daffodil Hill, which has been a popular draw since the 1940s.
