Headlands Beach State Park, located at 9601 Headlands Road in Mentor, Ohio, is famous for its mile-long natural sand beach along Lake Erie, making it the biggest beach in the state. This attraction makes it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and features some plants that can only be seen along the Atlantic Coast. There are many recreational opportunities at Headlands Beach State Park. The mile-long beach provides an excellent opportunity for those who enjoy sunbathing, swimming, beach volleyball, and other games one plays on the beach. The park offers restrooms, changing booths, and concession areas. Picnicking is welcome at Headlands Beach State Park. The picnic shelter at the park may be reserved, and the surrounding scenic area features grills and tables. Fishing is welcomed at the park, and a federal break wall on the park's east side provides the perfect fishing location. Common catches include walleye; smallmouth, rock, and largemouth bass; suckerfish; steelhead trout; crappie, yellow perch; catfish; carp; bullhead; and coho salmon. There are hiking trails next to the state nature preserve, and there's also a playground in the picnic area. There are other natural recreation areas next to the park. On the south side of the park is Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve, which has been designated as a National Natural Landmark. Open during daylight hours, this preserve features the Zimmerman hiking trail, allowing people to view the natural beauty. The Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve is on the east side of the park, and features one of the last Lake Erie beach and dune natural communities. Canada wild-rye, sand-dropseed, wild bean, and wafer-ash grow in its natural state in this area. The Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina is also there for the public's entertainment, which features five miles of nature trails. The city of Mentor offers tours by bike, foot, and boat.
