From 1912 to 1931, R. Guy Cowan's pottery studio produced over 850 distinct shapes with colorful, artistic glazes by some of the best artisans of the time. Cowan, who was a ceramics engineer, teacher, and designer, worked with fellow artists like Viktor Schreckengost, Alexander Blazys, Waylande Gregory, and Thelma Frazier Winter to create Art Deco art pottery and commercial tableware which could once be found in every fine store in the country.
Visitors to the Cowan Pottery Museum at the Rocky River Public Library, which houses over 1200 pieces from the famed studio, will find gorgeous displays of vases, bookends, candlesticks, lamps, and bowls in rotating exhibits, as well as the centerpiece exhibit of one of Schreckengost's famous Jazz Bowls.
