For a small space, the Warren County Historical Society Museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts that trace the Ohio River Valley region from prehistory to the 20th century. Among the many displays are Indian relics from 10,000bc, early farming equipment and domestic appliances, a transportation exhibit featuring sleighs, horse-drawn mail carts, carriages, and a 1908 Buick, and an entire wing dedicated to the 1830s Empire period.
Visitors can walk through the Village Green, where storefronts display small artifacts from eyeglasses and toys to musical instruments and firearms, or view typical rural settings at the country school, church, and the Butterworth Cabin, which was once an important stop on the Underground Railroad.
The Museum is most well known for its Shaker Gallery, which features a fine collection of paintings by Quaker artist Marcus Mote, as well as realistic room settings that depict the daily life of the Shakers. Guests can stop by The Rocking Horse gift shop for candles, pewter items, and Shaker reproductions.
