The Promont House Museum near Cincinnati, OH does not look like most museums do when you first see it form the outside. It's an Italianate Victorian house that is set high on a hill on five acres. In fact, that is how it came by its name. The area around the museum outside is simply beautiful with the many small gardens surrounding it as well as some native Ohio trees. Many outdoor activities take place at the museum because of all its splendor and beauty. It is listed in the registry of the National Register of Historic Places. It's also run by the Greater Milford Area Historical Society, who is constantly remodeling and adding accessories to preserve the original Victorian characteristics that it originally had many years ago.
Promont House Museum, which is located on Main Street in Milford, Ohio was built in 1865 and later purchased by John Pattison in 1905. Many of the artifacts, furniture, clothing and documents from that period are still on display in the museum today, compliments of the Greater Milford Area Historical Society, who now operate the museum. For the past twenty years, they have been renovating and refurnishing the building on the first and second floor. It now also consists of a gift shop and library as well as a time line being in the tower of the museum. The library is quite large and extensive. The Milford Schools have a "Partners in Education" program implemented that keeps them coming to the museum to learn more about the history of the area and museum.
The main purpose and mission of the Promont House Museum is to help the community learn more about the history, both cultural and physical, of the Milford community as well as educate them about the Victorian life style.
Very interesting to the public is the Historic Milford Village Series by The Cat's Meow Village. These are wooden replicas of some of the most historically important buildings in Milford. At this time, they have four pieces to the series, Milford Public School, Korner Barbershop, Promont House Museum and Old Stone Library.
