Mainstrasse Village is a designated and national historic district and home to Old World charm that comes from the 19th century German neighborhood. The village hosts a number of festivals each year including Mardi Gras, Goettafest and Oktoberfest.
Around the village are a number of attractions reflecting the areas local history and culture. At the western end of the village is the glockenspiel Carroll Chimes Bell Tower, constructed in honor governor of Kentucky, Julian Carroll. The Goose Girl Fountain, unveiled in 1980, can be found in the center of the village. Farmers raised geese in Covington, and the Grimm fairytale of the Goose Girl was used to represent the culture of the area.
There are a number of historical markers, many located in Goebel Park, dedicated to well-known Covington residents including William Goebel, elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Haven Gillespie, lyricist, who wrote the classic 'Santa Claus is Coming' To Town'. Two figures from the world of film are also remembered - Una Merkel, who won a Tony for Broadway hit 'The Ponder Heart', and Robert Surtees, who's Academy Award -winning films included King Solomon's Mines and Ben Hur.
The Village is known for its full calendar of festivals year-round. These include the Annual Car Show, Dog Costume Parade, and monthly Friday Gallery Hops and Antique Markets.
The Oktoberfest, held in early September, is one of the highlights of the year. Thousands of visitors attend to sample German foods and beverages, and enjoy live music, performances, and arts and crafts. The Kinderplatz and Amusement Midway cater for children of all ages.
