German Heritage Museum in Cincinnati, OH
The German Heritage Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio is the first museum in the region that presents and displays German American culture. It focuses on the history of German-Americans in the Greater Cincinnati area. It is one the of largest, major German-American centers in the entire United States.
The museum is currently maintained and operated by the German-American Citizens League of Greater Cincinnati. The organization was established in Cincinnati in 1895 and is the umbrella association of 25 organizations in the Ohio Valley. Each of these 25 organizations share an interest in German-American heritage and history.
The League actively supports the German-American Heritage Month since 1989. In 1989 it was involved in introducing German-American heritage into the school's curriculum in Cincinnati, and was also involved in organizing the first Oktoberfest in 1976.
The German Heritage Museum had originally been a log house built in 1840. To make it into a museum, building materials were donated by the German-American Citizens League by the Feist family from the Delhi Township. The house was moved in pieces to West Fork Park where it was reconstructed.
The museum is open from the end of May to the beginning of December every Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. The German Heritage Museum is closed on German Day and the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The museum periodically holds events. During those events the facilities will also be closed to the general public. Admission is free.
The museum located in the suburban area of West Fork Park in Green Township on the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio. Guests can visit the museum to learn about the history of German Americans in the Ohio Valley region of the Midwest.
