The Dinsmore Homestead in Boone County, dates from the late 19th century and remained in the Dinsmore family for five generations. Apart from the historic house, the grounds of the Homestead are popular with artists, and walkers enjoying the network of nature trails that cross the estate.
In 1839 James Dinsmore purchased 700 acres of land that were used for growing grapes and willows, and raising sheep. A house was built here in 1842 and was the family home for his three daughters, Isabella, Julia and Susan. Julia Dinsmore, who remained unmarried, inherited the farm in 1872 and continued farming it until her death in 1926, aged ninety-three. She kept detailed diaries of her life at Dinsmore and her poems were published by Doubleday in 1910.
The Dinsmore Homestead Foundation purchased the home, and 30 acres of surrounding farmland in 1987. The house is open to tours between April and mid December, that feature the formal living and dining rooms, the office, and bedrooms with four-poster beds. Throughout the original 19th century decor and many period details can be seen. Original furniture and personal belongings of the Dinsmore family are on display in every room. A collection of nearly 90,000 pages of family and farm records, letters and journals have been also been preserved.
Every year The Homestead hosts series of events including a Gala Fundraiser, Harvest festival and 'Christmas in the Country' event with dancing, music, and candlelight tours. The office and gift shop are open year round. Admission prices for the tour are $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors and $2.00 for children.
