Cincinnati holds a unique place in the history of the nation as the first state whose fire department made use of the steam fire engine, which was built here for the Cincinnati Fire Department in 1853. It is to commemorate this significant contribution and to honor the exemplary standards the Cincinnati Fire Department has set for the other state departments that the Cincinnati Fire Museum was established.
The Museum is located in a historic fire house which dates back to 1907. Here, you can view over 200 years of firefighting history with the old fashioned Hunneman steam pumpers, engines and host of interactive exhibits. The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts like authentic leather fire buckets, an ancient fire drums which was used in the 1800s and even the oldest surviving Fire engine in Cincinnati. You can also visit the 'Fox' which is a bright fire engine, developed by Ahrens Fox of Cincinnati especially for the museum. Children can even participate in an interactive bucket brigade which allows them use the pumper for themselves to take a quick walk down memory lane. The museum also allows visitors of every age to slide down the fire pole and even operate the lights, sirens and bells of the Emergency One fire cab.
The Cincinnati Fire Museum is also dedicated to spreading awareness about safety and precautions against fire hazards. You can watch a short film which explains Exit Drills in the Home, visit the Safe Home where you learn about how to respond in case of an emergency and even learn the rules of microwave safety in the Safe Home Kitchen. The museum also guides visitors through a safety drill and teaches the importance of not misusing the 911 service.
You can even have the museum host your meetings or private events. The Conference and Assembly Hall can accommodate groups of up to 100 guests and ensure a one-of-a-kind event in the historical environs of the Museum.
The Cincinnati Fire Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday. A visit to the museum will cost you about $7 per person with special discounts for children and seniors. If you're planning to visit in a group of 10 or more, you can even call ahead to avail of special rates or even arrange for a private tour.
