Carew Tower, Cincinnati's tallest building and most prominent landmark, was begun in 1929, one month before the stock market crash. Subsequent cuts in funding changed the outlook for the tower, which was originally designed as an art deco structure. The intended limestone facing was changed to brick, and planned elaborate metalwork and architectural motifs never reached above the third floor, resulting in a final product that resembles a smaller version of the Empire State Building.
Visitors can ride up to the Carew Tower Observatory on the 49th floor, where a clear day promises views of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, or opt for a moonlight tour that offers a lovely panorama of Cincinnati's lighted skyline.
