Big Bone Lick State Park near Cincinnati, OH is the perfect spot to stay when you're vacationing in the Cincinnati area. Located in Kentucky, this state park has quite a history behind it. Over 15,000 years ago, the area from Canada to the Ohio River would get covered with a large sheet of ice. Is spite of the ice, many creatures would come to the area to be by the warm salt springs that were part of the earth of the Big Bone Lick State Park. The creatures were mammoths, ground sloths, giant mastodons and the very thing that attracted them to the area also made it fatal for them. They would get trapped in the ground, which was referred to as "jelly ground". Their skeletons and remains left many clues about the life in the prehistoric time in Kentucky.
These fossil remains interested many people, even great Americans like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, both of who studied them. Many of the remains have been displayed in museums all over the world, specifically in the Big Bone Lick Museum.
The park and camping area offers a lot to the vacationer or tourist, including 62 campsites with each of them containing grills and utility hookups. For the children's fun, there is a playground and swimming pool. Rest rooms, showers and laundry facilities are part of the campsite as well as a campground grocery store. They want to make this as close to home-living as possible, including their reasonable rates of $20 per night for a couple.
The park is located on almost 40 acres of picnic area consisting of grills, tables, water and electricity connected to two picnic shelters. These can be reserved in advance.
Some of the area attractions are the museum and a gift shop. Nearby lodging consists of The Wallace House Bed & Breakfast or Christopher's Bed & Breakfast. Both of these beautiful places have almost any amenity you could need.
