River North neighborhood in Chicago, IL

Many major cities in the United States saw an era of urban flight during the last quarter of the 20th century. With residents looking to commute from the growing suburbs, business districts in the major cities folded and left areas empty and disheveled. This was also the case with the River North neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois.
Although during that time River North attracted an arts scene, it remained impoverished. However, it steadily grew into a hub of trendy culture, brimming with antique stores, art galleries, urban professionals, and boutiques. This area bounded by the Chicago River to the west and south, Michigan Avenue to its east, and Chicago Avenue to its north also features the most restaurants in any one neighborhood in Chicago.
Aside the great amount of restaurants, there are also more than 100 art galleries, rivaling only New York City as having the United States' greatest number of galleries. This corner of River North has even been given the nickname SuHu, as it falls near Superior and Huron streets. Galleries include the Kenneth Probst Gallery, the ZG Gallery, the Alan Koppel Gallery, and Primitive Art Works.
Restaurants range in size, style, and ethnicity. You'll find Mediterranean, South American, Asian, and hometown fare. The most famous restaurants in this area are the homegrown House of Blues and Harry Caray's Restaurant. Some chain restaurants make their home here, such as the Rainforest Café and Hard Rock Café, as well as local bars and clubs, including O'Leary's Public House, named after the owner of the infamous cow that reportedly started the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
As far as shopping is concerned, antiquing is the order of the day, with nearly 20 antique stores and warehouses, dating back to the 16th century. There are also a fine collection of furniture stores, including Luminaire and The Ambiente Collection. There's also the Apparel Center and the Merchandise Mart for fashion apparel.
