Macy's is a legendary store and corporation. The company operates one of the last great department store chains in the United States. It has branches from the east to the west coast including the famous Macy's on State Street in Chicago. The building offers the usual mixture of clothing, furniture and electronics as well as house wares. Within these historic doors, you can shop and dine.
The Macy's on State Street is special to those who live in and visit Chicago. It dates back more than 150 years. This is the former Marshall Fields Department Store. It was and is the second largest department store on the planet. A Chicago landmark, Marshall Fields, now Macy's has been a destination for many individuals, including Christina Dior and Yves St. Laurent. Both visited the famed "haute couture" shop, 28 Shop on the 3rd floor.
Macy's inherited the history of the building. They display it in the 7th floor Archives. The 7th floor is also home to the famed dining room, The Walnut Room, operating since 1907. You can also visit the 5th floor to admire the 1.6 million pieced Favrile Glass ceiling. This is the largest intact Tiffany ceiling.
Outside of the building, you can see the Great Clocks, each weighing 7 tons, still keeping time after all these years. At the main State Street entrance, stand the Great Granite Pillars. These massive structures date from 1902. Together with other historic architectural features make Macy's one of the most interesting buildings on the block.
